The cancellation has been based on unavailability of sponsors who was supposed to support its preparations. Neither a spokesman of the Tanga Motor Club or the Automobile Association of Tanzania’s chief executive officer Yusuf Ghor was available to confirm the latest development.
The event in Tanga was a season's opener out of the scheduled eight rallies that are lined up for the new unfolding season.
Some of the drivers who were gearing up for the event have expressed disappointment over the possible cancellation as they had already secured sponsorship to feature in the rally.
AAT’s Ghor would not be reached through his mobile phone to confirm the abrupt and shocking cancellation.
Whether a new date will be sought by the club after securing sponsorship or not, it will be known today when AAT or club officials will respond to this query.
However, should the rally be confirmed cancelled, then this will not be the first time for the Tanga Club to do so. Several seasons have passed and the club had managed to cancel rallies at eleventh hour.
Leadership instability and bickering have been chronic habits of the club that tried to be composed and stable for the last three back to back seasons.
Other rallies lined up for the new season include Mzizima, Kilimanjaro, Oryx Africa, Nane Nane, Guru Nanak, DMSC and Mount Uluguru of Morogoro.
Arusha Motor Sports Club has maintained unique consistency, composure and stability by staging two rallies per season without failure or cancellations for over a decade now.
Following the cancellation, it is not exactly known where the prize presentation ceremony for the last season’s winners to be organized by AAT will be held. AAT had planned to hold it in Tanga during the rally opener.
