DURING the Nane Nane Day celebrations, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through Breakthrough ACTION project is emphasizing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the “Holela-Holela Itakukosti” (Recklessness is Costly ) campaign, in partnership with the Tanzanian government through the Prime Minister’s Office – One Health Section, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Health.
AMR is a serious global health threat, exacerbated by the misuse of antibiotics in livestock. Poor hygiene practices lead farmers to over-rely on antibiotics, often without veterinary advice.
The campaign encourages farmers to implement effective practices such as maintaining hygiene, following biosecurity measures, and using antibiotics responsibly. Vaccinating livestock is also critical. Dr. Stanford Ndibalema, Assistant Director for Veterinary Public Health at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, stated, "Our slogan underscores the risks of neglecting good practices, urging farmers to prioritize hygiene and responsible antibiotic use to safeguard health and agricultural resilience."
