Parliament committee hails government over SGR funding

THE Parliament Infrastructures Committee has commended the government for allocating over 10 trn/- to implement the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project in Tanzania.

The committee's Chairman, Selemani Kakoso, said in Dodoma when closing a workshop organized by Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) to build the capacity of Members of Parliament about the SGR project.

 Kakoso, said that the SGR project is very important for the country's economy to fast-track development.

 "TRC was given a mandate to supervise the ongoing construction of the SGR, and indeed have done marvelously," he said.

 He called on the government to finalise the process of getting investors for the Mtwara- Mbamba Bay rail via Mchuchuma and Liganga.

 Kakoso further called on the TRC management to pay contractors and ensure the corporation invests more in the  manpower.

 Transport Minister, Prof Makame Mbarawa, assured the public that the fare tickets set for the new electric train will be affordable to all people.

 Mbarawa said in Dodoma during a workshop organized by the TRC to build the capacity Member of Parliaments about the SGR project.

 He said that the mandate to announce the transport fare is vested to the Land Transport Regulatory Authority(LATRA).

 "The process of reviewing proposed fares is still in the pipeline and, when it is over, the public will be informed," he said.

 Masanja Kadogosa, TRC Director General, said that all preparations for starting services are going on well.

 He said the services will start in July this year as directed by the Head of State, Samia Suluhu Hassan.
